Up to 120 players will descend on the Nchanga Golf Course this weekend for the two-day Innovate General Insurance-PGAZ Pro-Am tournament on the Copperbelt Province.

The tournament will be held on Friday and Saturday, 10th and 11th October.

Professional Golfers Association of Zambia (PGAZ) President Beza Daka says the tournament is crucial to raising the standard of local professionals.

Speaking in an interview, Daka said there is growing appetite for the game among Zambian players, evidenced by their recent participation in international tournaments in Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

“You could have noticed recently that the Zambian local professionals have made trips to Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo to play international tournaments. This is good and the courage really motivates us. So, as a local body, we are trying to ensure that they are kept competitively busy,” Daka said.

He said while the scores posted by Zambians abroad have been impressive, the Association wants better.

“Rome was not created in a day. The experience gained will now be on show at the Innovate General Insurance tournament,” he said.

Daka praised Innovate General Insurance for its commitment to the growth of the game and called on more corporate entities to come on board. He disclosed that Gulu Investment, Coca-Cola Beverages, Rock Tech Solutions and CMS Insurance Services have also joined the sponsorship.

Meanwhile, PGAZ will hold free coaching clinics for juniors and corporate amateurs at Nchanga Golf Club on Friday.

Daka added that the Association will organize another tournament next month ahead of the Sunshine Tour-sanctioned Lusaka Masters to give local professionals a chance to compete for bigger prizes.
