The Local Authority has since advised operators of bars, nightclubs and other liquor-licensed premises to adhere to the Liquor Licensing Act No. 20 of 2018 prohibiting admission of persons under the age of 18 into their premises.
Mansa Municipal Council Public Relations Officer, Joel Kashi warned that the local authority in collaboration with relevant law-enforcement and regulatory stakeholders has intensified inspections and enforcement operations against outlets admitting or employing underage persons.
“The growing trend of underage persons accessing drinking places and nightclubs is a serious concern, not only because it contravenes the law, but also exposes young people to environments and activities that may negatively affect their safety, wellbeing and development,” Mr Kashi said.
Mr Kashi stated that operators are compelled to verify the age of patrons and employees and ensure that their businesses do not expose underage persons to alcohol-related or other illicit activities.
“Bar and nightclub owners who deliberately disregard the law should expect enforcement action, depending on the nature and severity of the offence, offenders may face fines, closure of premises, revocation of liquor licences and imprisonment upon conviction, as provided for under the applicable legal framework,” he said.
The Council has since called on parents and guardians to play their part by monitoring the movements and activities of children, particularly during evening and night hours and to report establishments suspected of allowing underage persons to patronise their premises.
“Mansa Municipal Council remains committed to promoting a safe, orderly and responsible environment for all residents. The Council will not relent in enforcing laws and regulations designed to protect children and maintain public order within the District,” Mr Kashi said.
