Chongwe District Health Office has attributed the high number of cholera cases recorded in Ngwerere area to inadequate supply of clean water and poor sanitation practices.

District Director for Health Services, Morton Zuze has stated that residents, especially those residing in Sylvia Masebo Compound have continued drawing unclean water from shallow wells for household use despite efforts by government and some stakeholders to enhance water supply to the area.

Speaking during an epidemic preparedness, prevention, control and management meeting in Chongwe, Dr Zuze noted that poor sanitation practices have also contributed to the spread of the disease in the area.

He indicated that out of the 31 cholera cases that the district has recorded, 21 were recorded from Ngwerere.

Dr Zuze however, added that the District Health Office, with support from various stakeholders have put up some surveillance mechanisms and preventive measures to eradicate the  further spread of the disease in the area and other parts of Chongwe.

“We have been disinfecting and testing water from shallow wells, hotspot areas and a number of Public places such as markets, and we are also distributing chlorine in areas where we have recorded cholera cases,” he explained.

He further indicated that residents have been sensitised on the importance of keeping their surroundings clean as well as drinking clean safe water.

Dr Zuze also expressed concern over inadequate sanitation facilities such as toilets in the Meanwood Kwamwena area where four Cholera cases have been recorded.

He noted that most caretakers are residing in unfinished structures which have no water supply and toilets resulting in rampant open defecation.

He stated that his office would soon engage homeowners in the area to find a lasting solution to address the challenge.

Meanwhile, Chongwe District Administration Officer, Evaristo Kayaya, who chaired the meeting, called for concerted efforts from stakeholders in the district to partner with the Government to promote a coordinated response towards the fight against cholera in the District.

Mr Kayaya urged stakeholders in the District to render any relevant assistance to the District Health Office to support the cholera response activities it is undertaking.

“The fight against cholera in Chongwe is not the responsibility of the District Health Office alone, therefore, let us use a coordinated approach by assisting this office in any way we can to prevent any further spread of the disease and save lives,” he said.
