Zanu PF Cancels Crucial Politburo Meeting Amid Mnangagwa-Chiwenga Clash Over Party Constitution

HARARE — A scheduled Zanu PF politburo meeting set for 2 p.m. on Friday was cancelled following sharp disagreements between President Emmerson Mnangagwa and Vice-President Constantino Chiwenga over proposed changes to the party’s constitution, The NewsHawks reported exclusively.

The meeting was intended to address aligning the Zanu PF constitution with Constitutional Amendment Act No. 3 of the national supreme law ahead of the party’s annual conference, planned for 12–17 October at Chinhoyi University of Technology in Mashonaland West Province.

Zanu PF spokesperson Chris Mutsvangwa described the cancellation as resulting from “a clash or an overflow of programmes,” while party Director for Information and Publicity Farai Marapira said it was due to a “clash of programmes; but nothing serious.”

Party officials were expected to hold a press conference later on Friday at Spirit Embassy: The Goodnews Church in Braeside, Harare, with annual conference fund-raiser Phillip Chiyangwa among those set to address journalists.

The dispute centres on efforts by Mnangagwa and his allies to revise the party constitution in line with national constitutional changes that extended the presidential term and shifted elements of the electoral system.

Chiwenga and his supporters, drawing support from military and war veteran structures, have opposed the moves, viewing them as an attempt to extend Mnangagwa’s tenure beyond 2028 to 2030 and alter succession dynamics.

A senior party official described the atmosphere as tense, with the fight over the constitutional alignment intensifying.

The conflict has escalated in recent weeks, including Chiwenga’s reported boycott of the funeral of businessman Wicknell Chivayo, a figure close to Mnangagwa.

Zanu PF members were seen arriving at party headquarters earlier in the afternoon before the meeting was called off.

The situation has drawn comparisons within party circles to internal tensions that preceded the 2017 leadership change.
