K6 MILLION, ZERO ENVELOPES: HEROES STADIUM TURNS INTO A POLITICAL COMEDY
By Fredrick Banda
In the ever-busy streets of Lusaka, where political gossip travels faster than minibuses and drama is served hotter than nshima, Friday produced a political spectacle that looked like it had been written by a comedian who had spent too much time listening to politicians.
JJ Banda had reportedly announced that he would give Lusaka residents K6 million, and by the following day, Heroes Stadium had become the centre of attention. While President Hakainde Hichilema was addressing the nation on development, people were busy gathering at Heroes, apparently hoping to witness the miracle of money falling from the political sky.
The President was talking about development, but somewhere else, the K6 million had developed its own development agenda!
One can only imagine the excitement. In some minds, debts had already been buried, businesses had been born, and shopping lists had been prepared. Some people may even have started calculating how much they would receive, despite nobody having confirmed that the money would be shared equally. The millions were still a promise, but in the imagination of an eager crowd, the money was already working overtime.
Then came the political twist.
Could JJ Banda have known that an announcement of this nature might attract a crowd and create a situation in which the police would intervene? That is the question some observers might ask. If the gathering amounted to an unlawful assembly, the police could move to disperse it in accordance with the law. And just like that, a promise of money could become a completely different political story.
If this was a calculated political move, then the beauty of the strategy would lie in its simplicity. Announce the money, attract the crowd, and allow the resulting events to take centre stage. Before anyone could finish counting the imaginary millions, the headlines could change from “Who Is Getting the K6 Million?” to “Why Have the Police Arrived?”
What a script! The money brings the audience, the crowd sets the stage, and the police unexpectedly enter as supporting actors. Nobody needs to buy a ticket because the political theatre is happening in real time.
Meanwhile, the Tonse Alliance members who went to Heroes Stadium may have failed to anticipate how the situation could unfold. The excitement surrounding the promised money appears to have competed with the President’s national development address for attention. In the end, what was supposed to be a story about K6 million became a story about a gathering, the police and the political consequences
Imagine travelling to Heroes Stadium with the hope of witnessing a financial miracle, only to find that the main event has changed. You arrived mentally counting banknotes, but the day’s programme has you counting police officers instead! You came expecting a giveaway, but the atmosphere turned into a lesson in political calculations.
The police, according to the account of events, were not there to negotiate how the K6 million would be divided. Their focus was on dispersing the gathering on unlawful-assembly grounds. The anticipated money had attracted attention, but the intervention shifted the spotlight elsewhere.
And that is where the comedy of the situation lies: the promised millions did not have to reach anybody’s pocket to become the biggest talking point of the day. The announcement alone had the potential to draw a crowd, while the events that followed could generate an entirely different political dividend.
Of course, whether JJ Banda deliberately planned this outcome remains unproven, and the absence of a permit does not automatically make every gathering unlawful. The circumstances and applicable law matter. But politically, the episode raises an interesting question: can a promise of money become a trap for those who respond to it without considering the possible consequences?
As the dust settles, Heroes Stadium has provided a reminder that politics is not always about what is announced. Sometimes, it is about what happens after the announcement—and who benefits when the story takes an unexpected turn.
LESSON
: In politics, never count money that has not arrived. You may spend the whole morning dreaming of millions, only to discover that the biggest thing you collected was a political headache. Sometimes, the money is the advertisement, the crowd is the audience, and the real show is what happens next!
