A security guard is fighting for his life in hospital after he was attacked with a screwdriver while on duty at Choppies in Serenje, Central Province.

Serenje District Commissioner Ellen Miselo Mibenge has confirmed the heartbreaking incident.

She said that a group of individuals went to buy alcohol over the weekend at Choppies between 09:30 and 09:50 hours.

Mibenge noted that they opened the alcohol and started drinking before paying, and when advised that the law does not allow the selling and consumption of alcohol before 10 hours in the morning, they refused to comply.

She affirmed that management reported the matter to the police, and the group, including one of its vocal leaders, was released the following day.

Mibenge said that during the confrontation, one of the leaders warned that security guards from Choppies must watch their steps because they rule Serenje.

She emphasised that on Tuesday, a security guard while on duty was attacked with a screwdriver on his back, and management suspected it was the same person involved in the earlier incident.

Mibenge said that the security officer is in hospital battling for his life as investigations continue.

She has since condemned the attack and called for calm, urging residents to allow the law to take its course.

Mibenge warned that law enforcement agencies will not rest until the perpetrators are brought to book.

She urged police to be alert and proactive, noting that a similar incident occurred less than a week ago when a person was stabbed to death at Lions Club.

Mibenge said police should have been more proactive by not releasing the suspect so quickly, especially that he was bragging that he rules Serenje.
