Zambia is among the Sub-Saharan African countries whose economic growth prospects have been upgraded by the World Bank.

The World Bank says economic growth in the region is expected to rise from 4.1 percent in 2025 to 4.3 percent in 2026.

It says Zambia is among the countries recording an improved growth outlook.

The Bank says the outlook is being supported by stronger domestic demand, improved economic resilience and increased investment in digital technologies and the global energy transition.

However, the World Bank says economic growth across the region remains insufficient to create enough jobs for Africa’s rapidly growing labour force or significantly reduce extreme poverty.

World Bank Chief Economist for the Africa Region Andrew Dabalen says the next challenge is to turn economic growth into more jobs and better opportunities.

Mr. Dabalen says investment in the foundations of an Artificial Intelligence-ready economy could help African countries increase productivity, promote innovation and accelerate economic transformation.

The World Bank says countries such as Zambia will need to invest in reliable electricity, affordable internet connectivity, digital skills, quality data and other infrastructure to take advantage of Artificial Intelligence.

It says Zambia and other countries can also benefit from regional cooperation and stronger digital policies to expand AI-enabled solutions and create more employment opportunities.

The World Bank has, however, warned that rising global fuel, fertiliser and food prices, geopolitical tensions, climate-related shocks and tighter financial conditions remain risks to the region’s economic outlook.
