Cancer Diseases Hospital (CDH) Specialist Clinical and Radiation Oncologist, George Pupwe, has reiterated government’s investment in state of the art equipment and training of specialists in the fight against cancer.
Dr Pupwe has therefore encouraged members of the public to go for screening, stating that early detection of the disease is key to successful treatment.
He was speaking in Lusaka today when he appeared on Morning Blend TV show.
Dr Pupwe disclosed that 60 percent of patients are diagnosed with cervical cancer, while breast cancer is the second most common type.
He further urged women specifically, to take keen interest in their health and seek medical attention early, as this greatly improves their chances of successful treatment and survival.
Dr Pupwe also warned women against visiting the health facility only in the late stages of the disease, and encouraged them to take an active interest in regular self-examinations so they can seek care early.
He also discouraged the use of non-conventional treatments, urging women to visit the cancer hospital for professional examinations and treatment.
“There is no shame in getting checked, you just have to take that first step. Health is wealth,” he said.
The Cancer Diseases Hospital has lined up several activities for Cancer Awareness Month, including free screenings, clinical breast examinations for women under 40, and breast X-rays for women aged 40 and over.
October breast cancer awareness month, which is being commemorated under a global theme, “Every Story is Unique, every journey matter”, is a global opportunity to raise awareness on breast cancer and call for action to improve access to timely diagnosis.
