Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Mulambo Haimbe, has underscored the Lusaka City Council’s (LCC) vision of keeping the city clean, calling on the private sector to join hands with the council in this cause.

Mr Haimbe has called on the business community to partner with the local authority through corporate social responsibility initiatives to help achieve the Keep Lusaka Clean goal.

Speaking last night as guest of honour at a cocktail held in honour of the Mayor of Lusaka, Chitambala Mwewa, Mr Haimbe also highlighted the Lusaka City Council’s core responsibilities of revenue collection and service delivery.

The Minister further noted the need to foster a sense of ownership and pride in the city through a change of mindset from everyone.

Mr Haimbe congratulated the entire council leadership that emerged victorious in the August elections and encouraged them to put Lusaka and Zambia first in delivering services, within the confines of their mandate.

And the Mayor of Lusaka, Chitambala Mwewa, said consistent development in the city could be more effective if marketeers were documented.

Mr Mwewa also noted that street vendors are currently undocumented and vulnerable, adding that getting them into markets will help build a proper structure that can make it easier for them to also benefit from market empowerment like others have been.

He pointed out that cleaning the city will take some time but phase one starts with a smaller area and later rolled out.

“First thing we have to do is to ensure we relocate the vendors into the markets,” he said.

He urged Lusaka residents to get on board and help put the city first by supporting its effective functioning.

Mr Mwewa further encouraged other leaders to embrace this responsibility and take it seriously, as Lusaka is the country’s only capital city.
