The opposition Tonse Pamodzi Alliance will contest every by-election set for 5 November, and has chosen Ms Jean Kapata as its candidate for the Mandevu parliamentary seat. The alliance also pledged to stand together behind its presidential candidate, Mr Brian Mundubile, and his running mate, Mr Makebi Zulu, both of whom it says are unjustly detained.

The alliance announced the decisions in Lusaka after a meeting of its leaders, on the eve of nominations.

“We have resolved that we are participating in all of the by-elections,” the alliance said, presenting the meeting’s resolutions with leaders of its member parties seated alongside.

Beyond Mandevu, the alliance will field a candidate in Lumezi North, where it said a candidate had already been chosen. It will also contest the mayoral seat in Mbala and seven other ward by-elections that require fresh nominations. Full details of those candidates will be shared on Thursday, the alliance said, with every effort now going into filing nominations.

The meeting’s most important outcome, in the alliance’s own words, was a resolution to hold the coalition together. “We have made an absolute resolution that the Tonse Pamodzi Alliance will be alive and vibrant, and we are going to move into the future with unanimity,” it said.

That unity extends to its leaders in detention. “We are going to bind our hands together and support our presidential candidate, Honourable Brian Mundubile, and his running mate, Makebi Zulu, who have been unjustly incarcerated, as well as all our colleagues that are behind bars,” the alliance said.

“We are resolute that we must rise to the occasion and try to do everything possible to save our country within the ambit of the law.”

Leaders from across the coalition, including representatives of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and the Forum for Democracy and Development (FDD), endorsed the resolutions. Alliance figure Mr Mwenda offered a message of encouragement to supporters going through hard times.

“Times could be hard and challenging, but if we keep pushing, there is light at the end of the tunnel,” Mr Mwenda said. “God is watching us, and this pain that we are going through will be over. We keep praying for our leaders in prison, and all those across the country that are in detention and going through a difficult time. Don’t worry, it shall be well.”

Mrs Chalikosa turned to one of the opposition’s costliest mistakes at the August general election. She told members and structures that the alliance was dealing with the problem of double adoptions, which she said had cost the opposition a number of seats.

“Now that we have come together, you see a more united front and a properly structured alliance, with Pamodzi, Tonse and Woza working together, so that we give you what you want as the people of Zambia and what you deserve,” Mrs Chalikosa said. “So please hang in there. We are all working together to sort out all our differences.”

The FDD representative carried the same message to the grassroots, addressing members of Pamodzi, Tonse, Woza and their partners. “This thing is all about unity, and unity starts with you on the ground,” he said. “Once we are united, those that are bent on dividing us will have no way.”

The alliance’s entry sets up a crowded contest in Mandevu. The Leadership Movement (LM) has already adopted former University of Zambia lecturer Mr Ntazana Musukuma for the seat, and Mr Nebby Manda for Lumezi.

The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) will receive nominations on Thursday for the by-elections, which also include 11 wards across the country. Polling is on 5 November.
