Lifeline Childline Zambia in partnership with Strategic Youth Organization has trained Community Child Rights Committees in Mkushi District to strengthen their capacities to identify, handle and refer cases involving violence and abuse against children.

The training of Chibefwe and Kasokota Child Protection Committees is aimed at equipping community structures with knowledge and skills to protect children’s rights.

Speaking in an interview with the media, Lifeline/Childline Zambia Project Manager Don Miyanda said the programme is designed to ensure committee members are adequately equipped to handle child protection cases professionally while safeguarding the welfare of victims.

Mr Miyanda said it is important for committee members to understand how to respond to cases without exposing children to further victimisation.

“We want to build their capacity so that they can handle child protection cases in a more professional manner and with a human face so that they can refer them to the District Child Protection Committee,” he said.

He said the committees are also expected to remain vigilant and identify child protection cases within their communities.

Mr Miyanda stated that the trained committees should become change agents by taking an active role in promoting children’s rights and reporting cases of abuse.

Strategic Youth Organization (SYO) Executive Director Bright Mumba said the training will contribute towards reducing violence against children in the district.

Mr Mumba said stakeholders need to be proactive in identifying child protection cases instead of turning a blind eye to abuse occurring in their communities.

“We want stakeholders to be well trained so that they can be able to quickly identify cases that surround child protection. We want them to stop pretending that they are not seeing what is happening,” he said.

Meanwhile, Chibefwe Child Protection Committee Secretary Eunice Musukuma thanked the organizers for conducting the training, saying it has strengthened their understanding of their responsibilities in protecting children.

Ms Musukuma urged community members to become whistle-blowers by reporting suspected cases of child abuse to the relevant authorities.

“If they see that the rights of the child are being abused, they should report and as a committee we will do our level best to ensure that the rights of the child are protected,” she said.

She stressed that cases of sexual abuse should be reported regardless of the relationship between the victim and alleged perpetrator.

“Even cases like defilement, even if you are related to the perpetrator, you are supposed to report because if you don’t, you are ruining the child’s future,” she said.
