General News 1 min.Read Nyimba Teachers’ union calls for boy child retention programme By Kevin Kabwe October 6, 2026 FacebookTwitterPinterestWhatsAppNyimba District Teachers’ Union Representative, Wilson Kombani has called on the Government to introduce a programme aimed at keeping boys in school, similar to the Keep Girls in School (KGS) programme.
Mr Kombani said boys are also vulnerable to dropping out of school due to challenges such as drug abuse, charcoal burning among others.
He was speaking in Nyimba District during the commemoration of World Teachers’ Day held under the theme, “Standing with Teachers: 60 Years of Protecting the Profession, advancing its Status and Shaping our Future.”
Mr Kombani commended the Government for implementing the Keep Girls in School programme but said similar interventions should be extended to boys.
He proposed the introduction of a Keep Boys in School (KBS) programme to address challenges affecting the boy child.
“Government is doing well with the Keep Girls in School programme, but what about the boy child? Boys are dropping out due to drug abuse, charcoal burning and early labour activities. We ask that KGS be complemented with a Keep Boys in School programme because the boy child is also vulnerable,” he said.
Mr Kombani also called on the Government to expedite the confirmation of teachers who have served in acting positions for several years.
He said teachers serving as Heads of Department, Deputy Head teachers and Head teachers should not remain in acting positions for extended periods without receiving acting allowances or confirmation letters.
The Union Representative further appealed to the Government to facilitate the movement of teachers who are transferred by meeting their relocation-related costs.
Mr Kombani called for the timely payment of settling-in allowances and leave travel benefits to deserving teachers.
He also raised concern over teachers who have upgraded their academic qualifications but remain on the same salary scale for several years.
”Long-serving teachers, some of whom have between 15 and 20 years of service, should be considered for promotion and advancement in their careers,” he said.
He urged relevant authorities to ensure that teachers are promoted in line with their qualifications, experience and years of service.
