The Zambia National Education Coalition (ZANEC) has called for improved welfare, professional development and working conditions for teachers, to enhance the quality of education in the country.

ZANEC Executive Director Kenan Lungu says government and other stakeholders should strengthen teacher motivation and wellbeing by addressing challenges affecting their professional effectiveness.

Mr Lungu said that as Zambia commemorates World Teachers’ Day, which is being observed under the theme, “Standing with teachers: 60 years of protecting the profession, advancing its status and shaping our futures.”

He added that the education sector has come under increased pressure, following the implementation of the Free Education Policy, the transition to the 2023 Competence-Based Curriculum and changing learner needs.

Mr Lungu noted that although the government has recruited more than 42,000 teachers between 2022 and 2025, more needs to be done to create conditions that enable teachers to work effectively and grow professionally.

He cited a ZANEC study which found that 51 percent of teachers interviewed were poorly motivated, while 20 percent described their job satisfaction as very poor.

Mr Lungu said the challenges include limited career progression and professional development, inadequate teaching and learning materials, inequitable teacher distribution and inadequate housing, particularly in rural areas.

He has since called for meaningful involvement of teachers and unions in the formulation and review of policies affecting the profession.

Mr Lungu also urged the government to strengthen teacher deployment using reliable data on workload, vacancies, professional development and retention, while promoting mentorship and career development opportunities.

He further called for the construction of more housing units for teachers, especially in rural areas, in order to promote their dignity and improve retention.

Mr Lungu said continued investment in teachers was critical towards sustaining the gains made in expanding access to education.
