Kalumbila District Commissioner Brenda Sankisa has called on the District to work towards achieving an 87 percent education performance target and strive to become a leader in academic excellence.

Ms Sankisa says achieving the target requires collective commitment from teachers, school administrators, learners, parents and other education stakeholders.

Speaking during the commemoration of World Teachers’ Day in Kalumbila today under the theme, “Standing with Teachers: 60 Years of Protecting the Profession, advancing its Status and Shaping our Futures,” she said.

Ms Sankisa noted that the District should strengthen instructional supervision, use learner-performance data to identify learning gaps, provide remedial teaching and improve literacy and numeracy.

She has also urged teachers to uphold integrity, professionalism and accountability while rejecting examination malpractice, absenteeism, discrimination and abuse of authority.

And District Education Board Secretary Thompson Lungu said achieving the 87 percent target will require every school to embrace professionalism, accountability, teamwork and continuous improvement.

Speaking through District Education Standards Officer Grace Mwale, Mr Lungu said the district will strengthen instructional supervision, use learner-performance data to identify gaps and provide remedial teaching.

He has urged teachers and school administrators to remain focused on improving learner outcomes and work together to transform education performance in Kalumbila.

Primary Education Union of Zambia-PEUZ Vice President Mercy Miyanda has called for increased investment in teachers, saying improved learner outcomes depend on a motivated and adequately supported teaching workforce.

Ms Miyanda says the Government should address the backlog of teachers awaiting upgrading after acquiring additional qualifications and ensure that the necessary resources are provided to implement the directive to upgrade eligible teachers.

She has also called for continued recruitment and equitable deployment of teachers to address staffing gaps, particularly in rural and hard-to-reach areas.

Ms Miyanda says the Government should improve teachers’ salaries and conditions of service, while increasing investment in teachers’ housing and reviewing housing allowances to reflect current accommodation costs.

She has further called for stronger incentives for teachers serving in remote areas, including improved accommodation, transport and infrastructure, saying such measures are important in attracting and retaining teachers.

Ms Miyanda has also urged the Government to increase the education allocation in the 2027 National Budget to at least 20 percent, saying education should be treated as a strategic investment in human capital and national development.

She says while the Government has made progress in expanding access to education, increased enrolment and large classes continue to place additional demands on teachers.
