Football icon Kalusha Bwalya has paid glowing tribute to late former Zambia national team coach Freddie Mwila, describing him as a true pioneer and torchbearer of Zambian football.
In a tribute, Kalusha says Mwila helped open doors for generations of Zambian players seeking professional opportunities abroad.
He has also hailed Mwila for his pivotal role in rebuilding Zambian football following the tragic Gabon Air Disaster of 1993.
Kalusha recalls that within just 90 days, a new Chipolopolo team was assembled under difficult circumstances, demonstrating remarkable courage and resilience.
He notes that against all odds, that team went on to reach the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations final in Tunisia, where Zambia narrowly lost 2-1 to Nigeria.
Kalusha says that journey was more than a football achievement – it was a symbol of national pride and the determination of a nation to rise again.
“Freddie Mwila was part of that remarkable chapter in our history. His contribution to the game and the generations he inspired will never be forgotten. Rest in peace, Coach, you served Zambian football and your legacy will live on,” Kalusha said.
Mwila remains one of the most decorated figures in Zambian football history. He featured for Rhokana United, now Nkana, and became one of the first Zambians to play professional football abroad when he joined American side Atlanta Chiefs in 1967, later playing for Aston Villa in England.
As a coach, he etched his name in continental history when he led Power Dynamos to the 1991 African Cup Winners’ Cup, making Power the first Southern African club to win a continental title.
He also coached the Zambia and Botswana national teams, as well as Zanaco, Lusaka Dynamos, Nkwazi and Circuit Chiefs.
