Zambian music artist Towela Kaira has spoken out against online attacks and what she describes as false and damaging allegations being circulated about her, her husband and her family on social media.

In a lengthy statement shared online, Towela expressed disappointment over what she said was a pattern of hateful commentary, personal attacks and fabricated stories targeting her private life.

The singer recounted an encounter she had last year at Zambezi Mall with a blogger whose social media account she had previously blocked after he allegedly made offensive remarks about her and her siblings.

Towela said the blogger approached her, greeted her and later asked to speak with her when she was returning to her car. After recognising him, she told him she was not interested in having a conversation and that he should maintain the same attitude he had displayed online.

According to the artist, the blogger apologised for his previous comments, saying he regretted what he had said and that she did not deserve the treatment. However, Towela said she did not consider the apology genuine and chose to walk away.

She further accused the blogger of spreading what she described as serious falsehoods about her and her family, including allegations concerning her marriage and personal relationships.

Towela strongly rejected claims that she had ever been in an abusive relationship, saying she was disappointed that she had to address what she described as baseless allegations made by someone who did not know her or her family.

The singer also came to the defence of her husband, describing him as a hardworking, peaceful and private individual who takes care of her and their daughter.

She said her husband was not active on social media and was unlikely to respond to the allegations himself, prompting her to speak out in defence of his character.

Towela also questioned why some people appeared unwilling to accept that a young and successful man could genuinely love and support her, arguing that some online commentators had resorted to portraying her husband negatively rather than accepting their relationship.

The artist further addressed criticism surrounding her dressing, making it clear that her career and personal style should not be judged against people’s expectations of how a married woman should behave.

She emphasised that being married does not mean she must abandon her identity as an artist or seek approval from social media users over her outfits, pictures and personal choices.

“I don’t owe any of you modesty, and I don’t owe you someone to be proud of or look up to,” she said, while urging those who disapprove of her lifestyle to unfollow her rather than make personal attacks.

Towela concluded by asking people to respect her privacy and leave her husband and family out of online disputes, stressing that criticism of her fashion choices should not become an excuse to spread damaging stories about people close to her.

Her statement has brought renewed attention to the pressures public figures face on social media, particularly when criticism of their public image extends into their marriages and family lives.
