THE Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA) has approved a proposed 350-megawatt wind energy facility in Katete District, Eastern Province.

The Unika I and II Wind Energy Facility being developed by Mphepo Power Limited, will be located in Chief M’bangombe’s Chiefdom and comprise 42 wind turbines, an on-site substation and associated 330-kilovolt overhead transmission infrastructure.

ZEMA Manager Corporate Affairs, Ruth Kamwi says, the approval was made by the Environmental Assessment Committee of the sixth ZEMA Board during its ordinary sitting on September 24, 2026.

Ms Kamwi disclosed that the facility once operational, will generate clean and renewable energy while contributing to the diversification of Zambia’s energy mix away from hydropower.

She added that the Chewa people under Paramount Chief Kalonga Gawa Undi, own a 10 percent stake in Mphepo Power Limited through the Chewa Development Trust.
