Ministry of Defence Permanent Secretary Maambo Haamaundu says the elevation of the relationship from the Joint Permanent Commissions on Defence and Security to a Bi-National Commission has created a broader framework for Zambia and Zimbabwe to deepen cooperation on matters of mutual interest.

The Permanent Secretary says the Technical Experts Meeting has therefore set the tone for future Zambia-Zimbabwe engagements aimed at strengthening peace and security in support of broader developmental objectives, saying peace and security are critical foundations for advancing Zambia’s economic and social development agenda.

Mr Haamaundu said security cooperation with neighbouring countries, including Zimbabwe, is important in creating a stable environment necessary for the country to pursue its development aspirations under the Grow Zambia Agenda.

He was speaking after the close of the three day Technical Experts meeting for the Zambia-Zimbabwe Bi-National Commission held at Sandy’s Creation Resort in Lusaka.

Mr Haamaundu said the meeting has provided an opportunity for the two countries to establish a framework for future engagements on peace and security matters.

“Peace and security are very key because they are the foundation of economic and social development,” he said.

Mr Haamaundu noted that peace and security remain critical to Zambia’s economic and social development agenda, as they provide the foundation for sustainable development.
