When Kopala Deaf Netball Team took to the court at Mpelembe Secondary School in Kitwe, they did more than compete, they made a powerful statement about inclusivity in Zambian sport.

That statement was recognised when the Copperbelt Netball Association awarded Kopala Deaf the Most Improved Team Award during its Independence Tournament at the weekend, a tournament that brought together 21 teams from across the Copperbelt and Northwestern Province to celebrate Zambia’s independence through netball.

The tournament, graced by Provincial Sports Coordinator Nosiku and senior officials from Mufulira Municipal Council including the Town Clerk and Director of Housing, was held under the theme: Support the Girl Child Through Sport.

And support came from all corners.

In the Under-17 category, which alone attracted 12 teams, Luanshya Municipal Council were crowned champions after beating hosts Mufulira Municipal Council, with Victorious from Kitwe taking third.

Teams from Masaiti, Lufwanyama, Chililabombwe, Kalulushi, Ndola, Chingola, Wusakile Community, Mpelembe Secondary School and Kopala Deaf all featured, showing the depth of young talent emerging.

The Elite category saw Community Queens, sponsored by Kitwe City Council, prove too strong for the field. Kalewa from Ndola finished second while Kansanshi Foundation, who travelled from Solwezi, finished third in a category that also included Destiny and Copperbelt University.

In the Men’s category, which continues to grow in popularity, Kalewa completed a double celebration by taking first place, followed by Copperbelt University and Mufulira Stars. Wusakile Stars also competed.

But beyond the trophies, the stories of the individuals stood out.

Lufwanyama Town Council’s Brinya Makiku was named Upcoming Player of the Tournament, a recognition of emerging talent that the Association hopes will inspire other young girls to stay in sport.

“These awards celebrate not only winning but improvement, emerging talent and growth,” the Association said. “The progress of Kopala Deaf highlights the importance of providing opportunities for teams of all backgrounds.”

The Association said the tournament was more than just competition.

“It served as an important reminder of the role sport plays in building discipline, confidence, unity and positive social values. It provided an opportunity for players, officials and supporters to interact and celebrate the spirit of independence,” it said.

In a strong call to action, the Association urged communities, local authorities, corporate organisations and parents to invest in sport, particularly for the girl child.

“Providing girls with opportunities to participate in sport helps build self-esteem, develop leadership skills and keeps them engaged in constructive activities. It protects young people from harmful behaviours and negative influences,” the Association said.

As Zambia celebrates 62 years of independence, the message from Mpelembe was clear: the future of Zambian netball is not only bright, but also inclusive.
