The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) Copperbelt Referees Desk has held a capacity building workshop in Kitwe for referees training officers from eight districts of the province as the 2026 transitional season kicks off.

Referees training officers from Kitwe, Ndola, Mpongwe, Chingola, Chililabombwe, Kamfinsa, Chambishi and Kalulushi were in attendance.

Former National Referees Manager Dr Derick Kafuli was the facilitator at the training workshop in Kitwe on Friday.

Dr Kafuli, the former FIFA-accredited referee, said well-trained referees are essential to the promotion of football.

“It was a very successful and important training. I believe well-trained referees are the beginning of good football. We have equipped training officers who are going to train our referees for the betterment of our football,” Dr Kafuli said.

FAZ Copperbelt Referees Manager Evans Malata hailed the training workshop for referees training officers.

“We wanted to equip our referees training officers from all our districts on the Copperbelt Province. The seminar was very successful and very okay because we had experts in refereeing like Dr Derick Kafuli and Mr Bernard Chabala as facilitators,” Malata said.

“We are talking about experienced referees coaches and assessors whom we are depending on regarding the growth of refereeing,” he said.

Malata declared referees on the Copperbelt ready for the transitional season.

“Our referees are ready to handle matches as you know some are even handling Africa Cup qualifiers and CAF club games. Our referees are ready for the challenge ahead,” said Malata, the retired referee himself.

Malata has in the recent past advocated for capacity building among referees as a way of growing Zambian football.
