The briefing has been organised to guide aspiring candidates, election agents, media, monitors, and observers on the requirements and expectations for the nominations scheduled for Thursday, 8th October 2026 and the poll day slated on 5th November 2026.
Speaking during the meeting, Returning Officer, Gerald Maseka, who read a speech on behalf of District Electoral Officer Nsama Chiti, emphasised the need for all participants to follow laid down procedures and guidelines in accordance with legal provisions.
Mr Maseka stated that candidates are expected to meet all qualifications and requirements for nominations, adding that information on the required documentation would be shared during the briefing.
“It is the Commission’s expectation that there will be peaceful, orderly and responsible conduct among the candidates, political parties, their supporters and all other stakeholders prior, during and after the nominations,” he said.
The Returning Officer appealed to aspiring candidates and political party supporters to ensure they present themselves at the nomination centre with all required documentation and adhere to the Electoral Code of Conduct.
He further called on the media, election agents, monitors, and observers to exercise a high degree of professionalism and integrity in the execution of their duties.
“The media in particular should accord political parties and candidates fair, accurate and balanced coverage in their various media platforms,” Mr Maseka said.
He also reminded media personnel and all registered non-governmental organisations wishing to monitor or observe the election to apply for accreditation at the Civic Centre.
Mr Maseka announced that accreditation for the nominations would be conducted from today, Monday, 5th October, to Wednesday, 7th October 2026, while accreditation for the polls would run from Monday, 2nd November, to Wednesday, 4th November 2026.
He disclosed that the Commission has lined up a number of activities for the by-elections, including voter education, conflict management, and training of poll staff.
