The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has commenced training for the District Voter Education Committee (DVEC) and Voter Education Facilitators (VEFs) in Kanchibiya district ahead of a by-election in Lubaleshi Ward.

The by-election was caused by the death of United Party for National Development (UPND) aspiring Councilor for Lubaleshi Ward in the August 2026 general election, Evans Chileshe, who passed away immediately after filing his nominations.

The training workshop for DVEC and VEFs is being held at Kanchibiya Town Council’s new Civic Centre.

Kanchibiya District Electoral Officer, Julius Katuka, urged participants not to be complacent but proactive in their approach to voter education ahead of the by-election.

Mr. Katuka acknowledged that the district’s vast terrain often proves to be a challenge for Voter Education Facilitators hence the need for them to devise effective strategies for undertaking the voter education exercise.

“A lot of things happen in the field and we must strive to ensure we are professional as we carry out activities that will help facilitate the coming by-election,” Mr Katuka said.

He said every member of the committee has a part to play and must play it well.

Meanwhile, DVEC Coordinator, Chrispin Chishimba urged members to participate fully in the workshop so as to be well equipped for the coming by-election.

Mr Chishimba thanked members for attending the meeting promptly and urged them to demonstrate the same zeal towards the by-election that they have shown in previous electoral exercises.

And DVEC member, Ernest Kambindi, said the committee stands ready to carry out activities for the by-election.

Mr Kambindi said the by-election is of great importance to Kanchibiya district as Lubaleshi Ward is the district’s largest ward.
