Zambia Aquatics Federation President, Guy Phiri, has called on the government to increase investment in swimming facilities particularly in public schools, to improve access to the sport and help prevent drowning.
In an exclusive Interview with the media, Phiri said the shortage of accessible swimming pools remains one of the major challenges facing the development of swimming in the country.
He stated that investing in swimming facilities will provide young people with opportunities to learn the sport and acquire essential water safety skills.
Phiri highlighted that swimming has brought Zambia international recognition, with local swimmers winning medals at the Region 5 Games and the All-Africa Games.
He added that the country is proud of the achievements of its swimmers, clubs and coaches despite challenges in securing adequate funding.
Phiri said the federation will continue working with stakeholders, including the Sports Council of Zambia, to mobilise additional resources to support swimmers and strengthen the development of swimming.
