Zambia Police Service Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, Chipo Kaitisha, says the first victim identified as 13-year-old, Joyce Mulengekwa of Paumawa Village in Luangwa District, sustained fatal head injuries and was pronounced dead upon arrival at Katondwe Mission Hospital.
In a statement released to the media in Luangwa , Ms Kaitisha further confirmed the death of the second person who sustained serious injuries, identified as 13-year-old Jenipher Zulu, who has died today, Monday October 13, 2026, at around 05:00 hours while receiving treatment at Katondwe Mission Hospital.
She explained that brief facts of the accident are that the driver was travelling from west to east when he allegedly failed to keep to his near-side lane and struck four juveniles who were walking along the left side of the road.
Ms Kaitisha said the three surviving pedestrians were taken to the same hospital, where Jenipher later died.
She said the Police are yet to provide an update on the condition of the other two survivors.
“The bodies of the deceased have been deposited to Katondwe Mission Hospital mortuary, pending postmortem examinations while the driver remains in police custody as investigations into the accident continue,” she explained.
Ms Kaitisha further explained that the vehicle has been impounded at Chitope Police Post, awaiting re-examination by the Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA).
The Zambia Police has urged motorists to exercise caution, observe proper lane discipline and remain vigilant to protect pedestrians and other road users.
