TONSE PAMODZI ALLIANCE RAISES CONCERNS OVER POST-ELECTION DEVELOPMENTS WITH EU OBSERVER MISSION
Lusaka…………2nd November, 2026.
A delegation of the Tonse Pamodzi Alliance has met the European Union Election Observer Mission ahead of the release of its final report on Zambia’s August 13 General Elections.
The meeting provided an opportunity for the Alliance to get an insight into the contents of the final report and raise concerns over developments that have taken place since the elections.
The delegation was led by Hon. Chifumu Banda SC and comprised Sakwiba Sikota SC, Amb. Muhabi Lungu, Sylvia Chalikosa, Jean Kapata, Amb. George Chilumanda and Peter Sinkamba.
And Tonse Pamodzi Alliance Acting Secretary General Muhabi Lungu is hopeful that the engagement will help strengthen Zambia’s democratic space and improve the electoral system to restore public confidence.
Mr Lungu said the Alliance also raised concerns over the lack of an independent inquiry into the death of Mutotwe Kafwaya, continued arrests of opposition figures and the alleged denial by the Director of Public Prosecutions to have Brian Mundubile and Makebi Zulu brought before court for plea in the treason case.
He said the Alliance also raised concerns surrounding the electoral process in Mandevu and Lumezi constituencies where all other candidates reportedly withdrew, leaving only UPND candidates
“They had invited the Tonse Pamodzi Alliance to be able get an idea of what is contained in the final report. They continued to ask some more questions and be able to explain what is in the report. So far, based on what they have explained, it is a good report,..
But we also took an opportunity as Tonse Pamodzi Alliance to ensure that we explain some of the things that have transpired after those elections. The continued abuse of our colleagues in ensuring that the electoral process is not well guided regarding the fact that both Mandevu and Lumezi have had all other candidates withdrawing except UPND. All those were explained to our colleagues and we also made some recommendations on how we should be able to move forward,” he said.
Earlier, Chief Observer Michael McNamara and members of the Mission’s core team handed over the Mission’s Final Report on Zambia’s 13 August 2026 general elections to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Zambia
