Six people have died, while one other is receiving treatment at Mazabuka General Hospital following a road traffic accident in Chikankata District, Southern Province.
The accident occurred on October 25, 2026, around 11:10 hours opposite Lusitu Farm, approximately 15 kilometres south of Chikankata Police Station along the Great North Road between Chikankata and Mazabuka.
Southern Province Police Commanding Officer Moono Namalongo says the accident involved a Sinotruk, registration number AIH 1014, towing a trailer bearing registration number AIH 1253, driven by 62-year-old Mkhalipe Mwandu Mackson of Lusaka West, Lusaka, and a Toyota Wish, registration number AIH 9873, driven by 40-year-old Levy Mutope of ZESCO Compound, Victoria Falls, Livingstone.
Mr Namalongo says preliminary investigations indicate that the truck driver lost control while attempting to overtake improperly, resulting in a head-on collision with the Toyota Wish travelling in the opposite direction.
He says the Toyota Wish driver and five passengers sustained fatal injuries and were rushed to Mazabuka General Hospital, where they were pronounced dead upon arrival, while another passenger later died in hospital.
Mr Namalongo identified the deceased driver of a Toyota Wish as Levy Mutope, passengers Kabela Samba and Benjamin Kabamba, both males of Chirundu while Cresencia Kabazungu, a female of Chirundu; Nevious Moonga, a female of Kafue; and 25-year-old Soko Boyd, a male of Namwala, who died in the early hours of October 26, 2026.
He added that the surviving passenger, 30-year-old Rolf Namala of Garden Compound, Lusaka, sustained serious injuries and remains admitted to Mazabuka General Hospital, where his condition is reported to be stable.
Mr Namalongo says the bodies of the six deceased have been deposited in the hospital mortuary, awaiting postmortem examinations.
He says the truck driver escaped uninjured but left the scene before later reporting himself to the police.
