A school headteacher in Mkushi distict has been arrested for allegedly stealing maize worth 36,000 Kwacha meant for the school feeding programme.

Both Central Province Police Commissioner Lemekani Chirwa and Mkushi District Commissioner Jonathan Kapungwe have confirmed the arrest of Kangalati Primary School Headteacher Victor Kaoma.

Mr Chirwa stated in a telephone interview that the suspect has since been charged with the offence of theft by public servant and will appear in court soon.

He explained that the suspect was arrested following a tip from a member of the Parents Teachers Association (PTA).

And Mr Kapungwe has appealed to headteachers and other officers entrusted with receiving supplies for learners to ensure that all items were properly accounted for.

“My earnest appeal to headteachers entrusted to receive items meant for learners is that they should account for everything they receive,” he said.

Mr Kapungwe said the government is making efforts to safeguard learners’ welfare through programmes such as school feeding, which are intended to minimize absenteeism and school dropouts.

He, however, expressed concern that the alleged theft of supplies meant for learners undermines government efforts.

“Now we begin to sabotage government efforts. In Mkushi, we will not allow it,” he said.

Mr Kapungwe warned that those involved in the misappropriation of government supplies would face the law, regardless of their position.

“I caution everyone who may be excited to engage in such acts that the long arm of the law will catch up with them. You will be on your own, just like Mr Kaoma. We shall spare no one,” he said.
