A nine-months-old baby girl is battling for her life at Chipata Central Hospital after she was shot by unknown person(s) while sleeping in her house in Mchenga Compound, Chipata District.

Mr Mweemba said Chipata Central Police Station received the report yesterday, 18th October 2026 at 18:30 hours, from the mother of the victim, Karen Phiri aged 24 years of Mchenga Compound.

He said brief facts are that at around 21:00 hours, the mother was sleeping with her child in the house before she went to the toilet outside, leaving the child inside.

“Whilst outside, the grandmother of the victim who was inside the house heard a bang and immediately the child cried. Upon hearing that, she rushed to the bedroom where the child was and found that the child was in a pool of blood with a wound on the forehead,” Mr Mweemba said.

He said the mother who was outside also rushed back into the house and found the child injured, and later rushed her to Chipata Trades Mini Hospital where she was attended to and referred to Chipata Central Hospital.

Mr Mweemba said while the mother was at the hospital with the victim, the grandmother, Agness Daka aged 57 years of the same abode, discovered a projectile where the child was sleeping, and at the hospital it was discovered that the child had sustained another wound at the back of the head.

He said police officers who visited the scene discovered a hole on top of the roof suspected to be the entrance of the bullet.

“The projectile was picked from the scene and has been kept as an exhibit. The victim is currently admitted at Chipata Central Hospital Intensive Care Unit and is in a stable condition,” Mr Mweemba said.

He said investigations have since been instituted into the matter.
