Mongu East Constituency Member of Parliament Mubita Nawa has inspected rehabilitation works being carried out by the Mongu Municipal Council on the five‑kilometre Old Shoprite Road, which borders his constituency and Mongu Central Constituency.

Speaking shortly after inspecting the works, Mr Nawa said he appreciated the efforts being undertaken by the local authority, especially given the difficult terrain in Western Province for road construction.

He, however, noted that much stiller needs to be done.

Mr Nawa said the efforts were recognized but more could have been slightly done in a strategic manner in terms of resource mobilization.

“I must appreciate your effort; I know the difficulties of Western Province in terms of construction of roads but my immediate assessment is that more could have been done in a slightly strategic manner in terms of resource mobilization”, he said.

Mr Nawa said he will seek the President’s support to have the road upgraded to bituminous standard and transformed into a dual carriageway, given its importance and strategic location.

He added that he will also push for the installation of street lights along the stretch of the said road.

Meanwhile, Mongu Municipal Council Director of Engineering Services Jones Siang’andu said the approximately five‑kilometre Old Shoprite Road currently under rehabilitation is part of the 16.5‑kilometre road network approved for future upgrading to bituminous standard in Mongu.

Mr Siang’andu pointed out that due to the road’s deplorable state, the local authority has embarked on pothole patching and repairing of its shoulders that have collapsed.

He disclosed that the local authority is using funds received from the Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA) to carry out the rehabilitation works, at a total cost of four hundred and sixty‑six thousand kwacha (K466,000), which include pothole patching and repairing collapsed road shoulders.

And Ilute Ward Councillor Nyambe Mwitelela expressed happiness at being engaged by the parliamentarian during the road inspection as he visited the constituency.

Mr Mwitelela said in the past there were no such engagements adding that this kind of work approach could enable information from the parliamentarian and the councilor trickle down properly to the electorates.
