JEAN KAPATA FOR TONSE PAMODZI, ADRIAN BANDA FOR UPND IN MANDEVU BY-ELECTION

The Tonse Pamodzi Alliance has adopted former Mandevu Member of Parliament Hon. Jean Kapata as its candidate for the Mandevu Constituency parliamentary by-election, while the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND) has adopted Adrian Banda to contest the seat.

The two candidates are now set to face each other in the November 5, 2026 by-election, as the two political camps prepare to mobilise support in one of Lusaka’s key constituencies.
The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has scheduled the Mandevu parliamentary by-election for Thursday, November 5, 2026, following an inconclusive parliamentary election during the August 13 general elections.

The Commission ordered a fresh election after a security incident at the constituency’s results totalling centre disrupted the aggregation and left the Returning Officer unable to declare the parliamentary result.

According to the ECZ, unknown individuals attacked the totalling centre on August 18, destroyed results transmission kits and took away election documentation, making it impossible to complete the process and declare a winner. The Commission subsequently resolved to conduct a fresh parliamentary election in Mandevu.

Kapata is a former Mandevu MP and previously represented the constituency in Parliament under the Patriotic Front. The National Assembly’s records list her as the Mandevu MP in the previous parliamentary term.  Banda, meanwhile, contested the Mandevu seat as an independent candidate in the August 2026 general election before rejoining the UPND ahead of the by-election.

The ECZ has set October 8, 2026 for nominations, with campaigns scheduled to run from October 10 until November 4, before voters cast their ballots on November 5.

The adoption of Kapata and Banda places the Tonse Pamodzi Alliance and UPND at the centre of the Mandevu contest, with both sides expected to intensify their campaigns as the nomination and polling dates approach.
