HH ORDERS GOVERNMENT INSTITUTIONS TO SWITCH TO ELECTRIC VEHICLES
President Hakainde Hichilema has announced that all Government institutions will now be required to purchase only electric vehicles as part of measures to reduce Zambia’s dependence on imported fuel.
Speaking during the official opening of the First Session of the Fourteenth National Assembly in Lusaka today, President Hichilema said the decision follows growing instability in global petroleum markets caused by geopolitical tensions.
The Head of State said Zambia must take decisive steps to protect itself from fluctuations in international fuel prices by embracing cleaner, more affordable and sustainable energy alternatives.
President Hichilema disclosed that Government will partner with the private sector to establish electric vehicle charging infrastructure across the country to facilitate the transition.
He has also encouraged businesses, cooperating partners and ordinary citizens to embrace electric mobility as part of efforts to strengthen national energy security.
Meanwhile, President Hichilema announced plans to accelerate the construction of petroleum pipelines connecting Zambia to Angola, Namibia, Tanzania and Zimbabwe.
He said the projects will diversify the country’s fuel supply routes, create employment opportunities and reduce dependence on a single supply corridor.
The President further disclosed that Government will review the Energy Regulation Board’s monthly fuel pricing mechanism to establish a more predictable and efficient petroleum supply system.
He also directed the Ministry of Energy to implement the country’s fuel blending strategy without delay to reduce the fuel import bill and support the local ethanol industry.
President Hichilema reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to ensuring competitive fuel prices and reliable petroleum supplies while promoting Zambia’s transition towards cleaner energy.
