A teacher’s house at Buyaka Primary School in Kawambwa District in Luapula Province has had its roof blown off following heavy rains.

Deputy Head Teacher, Cornelius Chalwe, said the situation is raising concerns over the condition of school infrastructure ahead of the anticipated El Nino weather conditions.

Mr Chalwe has appealed to the Government to consider renovating the school’s dilapidated infrastructure before the onset of heavy rains to prevent further damage.

He has also appealed for support towards the construction of a Secondary School to improve access to education in the area.

Meanwhile, Kawambwa District Commissioner, Godfrey Chilambwe has urged schools to utilise available funds to maintain and improve their infrastructure.

Mr Chilambwe said schools are allocated five percent of their funding for infrastructure development and should use the provision to undertake renovations in line with the established guidelines.

He encouraged school authorities to prioritise the maintenance of buildings to ensure a safe learning environment for learners and teachers.

And the Disaster Risk Management Division (DRMD) representative, Muunga Hansingo has echoed the need for schools to maintain and renovate their infrastructure in preparation for the anticipated El Nino weather conditions.

Ms Muunga has called on school authorities to take preventive measures to minimise damage to infrastructure during the rainy season.
