Vice President, Mutale Nalumango, says the government will strengthen monitoring in Ministries and government agencies to prevent the misappropriation and misapplication of public funds.
Mrs Nalumango says the government is committed to ensuring that recommendations arising from the Auditor General’s reports are followed up and appropriate action taken against those found wanting.
She said this in Parliament today during the Vice President’s Question Time when responding to Bahati Member of Parliament (MP), Sydney Kaweme, who wanted to know the measures the government is implementing to address the rampant misappropriation of public funds highlighted in the 2024 Auditor General’s report.
Mrs Nalumango stated the National Assembly has an important role to play in ensuring that government acts on recommendations contained in the reports, as part of its oversight and accountability responsibilities.
She assured that the government takes appropriate action against individuals involved in financial irregularities, with some cases referred to the courts for prosecution and those found guilty of misappropriating public funds are sent to jail in line with the law.
Mrs Nalumango, however, acknowledged the need to strengthen existing mechanisms to ensure that public resources are used for their intended purposes.
She further called on lawmakers in the country to work with the government in identifying measures that could help prevent the abuse of public funds and strengthen accountability in public institutions.
The Vice President emphasised that the government will continue to operate within the law while taking appropriate action against selfish individuals who deliberately embezzle funds meant for national development.
