…calls for household cleanliness to complement city-wide efforts

Former Minister of Community Development and Social Services, Ms Doreen Mwamba, has backed Lusaka Mayor Mwewa Chitambala’s transformative agenda to restore cleanliness and order in the city.

Ms Mwamba says Mayor Chitambala’s efforts should not be viewed through political lenses, but as a collective responsibility and a genuine desire to build a city that residents can be proud of.

She said Zambia’s socio-economic development depends, among other things, on creating a clean and conducive environment that supports business growth, public health and hygienic living.

Ms Mwamba, however, expressed concern that levels of filth in Lusaka have reached alarming levels, requiring a fundamental shift in individual and collective attitudes towards cleanliness.

She called on residents to make household cleanliness part of the broader campaign for a clean, green and healthy city.

“Cleanliness must start at home. What we do within our households ultimately contributes to the kind of city we have,” Ms Mwamba said.

Ms Mwamba, who is also a UPND National Management Committee Member, wondered what had happened to Zambia’s once-renowned clean cities, citing Chingola, which was previously recognised as one of the cleanest cities in the country.

“It’s not just about wearing good make-up and clothes. What about the environment you are coming from?” she asked.

Ms Mwamba has since called for a “reboot” and mindset change among citizens, saying this would help create cleaner, greener and healthier cities while improving the overall quality of life.
