Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan Visits Chivayo Residence To Pay Last Respects Amid Media Blackout
HARARE – Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan and her delegation have arrived at the home of the late businessman Wicknell Chivayo to pay their last respects, journalist Hopewell Chin’ono has reported.
Chin’ono said security agents at the Chivayo residence had imposed a complete media blackout, with cameras and mobile phones not allowed inside.
“Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan and her delegation have arrived at Wicknell Chivayo’s home to pay their last respects. Cameras and mobile phones are not allowed, and there is a complete media blackout, according to state security agents at the residence,” Chin’ono wrote.
The visit has not yet been officially confirmed by the Tanzanian Presidency or Zimbabwe’s Ministry of Information.
Chivayo, 45, died last Wednesday when a helicopter he was travelling in crashed in Marondera. Two pilots, Captain T. Soda and Captain Courage Mtavirwa, and his aide, retired Lance Corporal Sanelisiwe Magagula, also died in the crash. All four have since been buried.
The businessman, who had extensive business interests across Southern Africa including in Tanzania, was known for his close relationship with several regional leaders and for securing major government contracts in Zimbabwe.
President Hassan’s visit would mark the highest-level foreign delegation to visit the Chivayo family since his death. Chivayo had in the past posted about his business dealings in Tanzania and his interactions with President Hassan’s government.
Security at the Chivayo residence in Borrowdale Brooke has remained tight since his death, with state security agents controlling access.
