Lusaka Mayor Chitambala Mwewa has been sworn into office, formally beginning his tenure as the Mayor of Lusaka following his election in the 2026 general elections.
Mwewa took the oath of office this morning before Chief Resident Magistrate Hon. Nthandose S. Chabala, with his official installation scheduled to take place this afternoon.
His swearing-in marks an important step in the assumption of his responsibilities as head of the Lusaka City Council, following his election to the mayoral position in August.
The Electoral Commission of Zambia declared Mwewa duly elected Mayor of Lusaka after he polled 200,029 votes in the August 13, 2026 general elections. His election was later challenged before the Local Government Elections Tribunal, but the petition was withdrawn by consent of the parties, leaving Mwewa duly elected as Mayor of Lusaka.
Lusaka Town Clerk Oliver Muuka described the swearing-in ceremony as more than a symbolic occasion, stressing that it is a legal requirement for anyone assuming public office.
According to Muuka, the requirement is provided for under the Local Government Act No. 2 of 2019, as read together with Article 260 of the Constitution of Zambia Act No. 2 of 2016.

He explained that the law requires a person assuming public office to take an oath of office and any other prescribed oath before commencing the duties of that office.
Muuka said the oath taken by the new Lusaka Mayor represents a commitment to effective service delivery, confidentiality and acting in the best interests of the people.
He further described the oath as a reminder that leadership is a trust and that the confidence placed in an elected official must be honoured through discipline, transparency and accountability.
Muuka urged Mwewa to use his new position to promote unity, transparency and dedication in serving the residents of Lusaka.
He also called on all stakeholders to work together towards building a city that reflects the aspirations and needs of its residents.
Mwewa assumes office at a time when Lusaka City Council is dealing with major urban challenges, including cleanliness, street vending, traffic management and the organisation of activities within the Central Business District.
In recent weeks, Mwewa has been associated with the council’s Operation Clear Path initiative, which has targeted unauthorised street vending and other activities in the city as part of efforts to improve order, sanitation and public safety.
The mayor’s official installation later today is expected to formally mark the beginning of his tenure as Lusaka’s civic leader.
