NEWLY-INSTALLED Lusaka Mayor Chitambala Mwewa says keeping the country’s capital city clean is a shared responsibility rather than the duty of the council alone, pledging to place the interests of residents at the centre of his administration.

Mr Mwewa says developing and keeping Lusaka clean requires firm partnerships among the central government, local authority, private sector and communities, among stakeholders.

He wants councillors in Lusaka to work together to identify challenges and find practical solutions while involving communities in shaping decisions that affect them.

Speaking after being installed as City Father yesterday, Mr Mwewa said Lusaka faces challenges that demand urgent attention, pledging to place people’s interests at heart.

“We must continue to address issues including waste management, drainage, road infrastructure, traffic congestion, sanitation, housing, markets, street lighting, environmental protection and access to quality social services,” he said.

“The council must provide systems, infrastructure, enforcement and public education.”

The colourful installation ceremony was preceded by the Mayor’s Walk at the Civic Centre grounds before taking oath.

His mother, wife and other relatives, alongside civic leaders and some lawmakers, attended the historic event.

“My administration will place residents’ interests at the centre of our work. I will listen, engage, consult and act in the best interest of the majority citizenry in our city,” Mr Mwewa said.

He said his leadership will be centred on integrity, transparency, accountability, fairness, professionalism and service to the people.

Gracing the event, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Mulambo Haimbe reminded the mayor that residents yearn for a city where traffic flows smoothly, housing is dignified, and public spaces are safe and welcoming.

“As you take up this mantle, expectations are high and I am glad to note that some of the city’s expectations are already being met.

“Our residents long for clean streets, efficient waste management, reliable street lighting, safe markets, and functioning drainage systems,” Mr Haimbe said.

“These are not luxuries; they are the foundations of a capital worthy of its name.”

administration remains steadfast in its commitment to strengthening local governance.

Mr Haimbe said Zambia’s prosperity depends on the strength of its cities and communities.

Meanwhile, Mayor of Luanshya Charles Mulenga has vowed to transform the district through improved service delivery, waste management, and better coordination between local and central government.

During his installation yesterday, Dr Mulenga highlighted critical challenges in the area like poor infrastructure, property documentation delays of up to five years, and informal street trading that requires urgent attention. https://enews.daily-mail.co.zm/welcome/home
