Twenty-two (22) herds of cattle have died after being struck by lightning in Sikongo District of Western Province.

The incident occurred on Monday, October 12, 2026 at Luwe Village in Chief Kaywa’s area, where four families were devastated after losing their livestock, which is their main source of livelihood.

Among the affected is Mukubi Village Headman, Richard Namushi Muwana, who lost ten cattle in the tragedy.

Mr Muwana said the loss has heavily affected him as cattle rearing was his major source of income which he used to support his family and sponsor his children at the university.

He further disclosed that this is not the first time he has experienced such a loss, as he lost 25 cattle in a similar incident in 2015.

Mr Muwana has since appealed to the government to intervene and render support to the affected families.

Meanwhile, the Sikongo District Administration has assured the affected families that the matter will be referred to relevant authorities, to ensure that assistance is provided.
