A 21-year-old woman of Green Village in Chief Mwangala’s area in Chadiza District has lost property valued at K950 after her grass thatched house was gutted in suspected arson.
Eastern Provincial Police Commanding Officer, Robertson Mweemba, confirmed the accident to the media.
He said the incident occurred on October 13, 2026 around 01:00 hours at Green Village.
Mweemba said Betty Sakala 21 reported to Chadiza Police Station yesterday October 13, 2026 around 17:15 hours that her house was burnt to ashes by unknown persons.
” Brief facts are that the victim after supper with her children retired to bed with her two daughters as her husband Christopher Banda was not home. He had gone to his first wife,” Mweemba said.
He explained that whilst asleep, Sakala was awakened by her two daughters who were choked by smoke in the house.
Mweemba said the three rushed outside and discovered the house was on fire and shouted for help but the house had already caught fire.
He said property destroyed includes three blankets, six pairs of shoes, mats, skirts, blouses, trousers and shirts valued at K950.
Mweemba said police officers visited the scene and confirmed the remains of burnt items.
No arrest has been made yet but investigations have been instituted.
