Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) Senior Tax Consultant Taxpayer Services and Education, Adrian Saluti says paying taxes plays a major role in the country’s development process.
Mr Saluti notes that revenue collected helps Government finance various sectors and progammes such as health, education, road works, pay salaries, CDF and infrastructure development among many other essential services.
He explained that taxation has played a significant role in the development of many countries, where citizens pay higher taxes than in Zambia, and that this is why Zambians should comply with their tax obligations.
Mr Saluti was speaking during a media workshop for Lusaka Province-based journalists in Chongwe District, when he explained how the construction sector has benefited from these taxes.
“The construction sector plays a vital role in Zambia’s economic development through infrastructure development, job creation and the growth of businesses across the country,” Mr. Saluti said.
He added that sustainable business growth goes beyond delivering quality projects, as it requires tax compliance hence ZRA’s promotion of a culture of voluntary tax compliance that supports business sustainability, fair competition and national development.
Mr Saluti said that funding public service expenditure through tax revenue helps reduce the country’s dependence on foreign aid.
Meanwhile, ZRA Senior Corporate Affairs Officer Robert Zawe explained that a well-informed media will be able to give the nation accurate and timely information on taxation, which the public can use to make informed decisions.
Mr Zawe said interactions between ZRA and different media organisations helps to identify gaps, find solutions and help in asking the right questions which will be beneficial to everyone including the public.
He stated that some people get scammed at border posts by people purporting to be agents because they lack basic information on how certain operations are done.
He encouraged the public to take advantage of online platforms by the institution where information on ZRA matters are well explained through accurate information.
