THE Zambia Meteorological Department (ZMD) has called for strengthened awareness activities on El-nino in Sinda district.

Eastern Provincial Meteorological Officer Daniel Mumbo says intensified sensitisation will enable farmers carry out activities with an informed decision as the impact of the El-nino which is now characterized as super will be devastating.

Mr Mumbo disclosed that Sinda and some parts of the Eastern Province are expected to be heavily affected by the Super El-nino in the 2026/2027 farming season.

The Meteorological Officer warned that with the Super El-nino in effect, the affected parts of the Province including Sinda are expected to only have enough moisture for crop plantation by mid-December, which will reduce by March 2027 and farmers are guided as such.

Mr Mumbo further urged stakeholders in the district to work in collaboration to sensitize the community and share the early warning signs of the super El-nino that the country is experiencing this season.

He said the Super El-nino will affect a larger population and the government will not have the capacity to support everyone, hence stakeholders are advised to work together and encourage preservation of some food products.

And speaking during an engagement with stakeholders and the Meteorological Department Officials, Sinda District Administrative Officer (DAO), Stephen Tembo, directed Heads of Government Departments to ensure that information is shared with the farmers and ensure that they make informed decisions regarding the season.
