After a 14-year absence from the top-flight league, Luanshya outfit Stylish Roan United have earned admiration after launching their transitional Super Division campaign with a vital away victory in Lusaka.

Promoted side Roan stole the limelight on the opening weekend of the Super Division after humbling Nkwazi 2-1 at the usually fortress Edwin Imboela Stadium in Sikanze Police Camp.

A year ago, Roan were competing in the FAZ Copperbelt Provincial League before earning promotion to the National League at the start of the 2025/26 season.

Coach Satchmo Chakawa’s boys ended a 14-year hiatus from the Super Division when securing promotion from the National League at the end of the 2025/26 season.

According to Chakawa, a retired goalkeeper, hard work and passion have kept the Kafubu Stadium side going.

Roan are competing in Stream B of the Super Division alongside Green Eagles, Red Arrows, Green Buffaloes, Kabwe Warriors, Zesco United, Nkwazi, Mutondo Stars, Mufulira Wanderers and Chirundu United.

“I saw the hard work, passion and the desire from the boys to get three points,” Chakawa reacted after the match against Nkwazi.

“At the moment our primary focus is to survive relegation so the more games we win the better for us. People should expect effort, fight, and passion but if we fail then we fail as a team,” he said.

Roan will host Green Buffaloes in their next fixture at home in Luanshya this Saturday.

“Our desire was to get three points and we got the points. It was important to win our first game. Now our focus is on the next game against Green Buffaloes at home. We will be able to perform against Buffaloes and get another good result,” Chakawa said.

He is also banking on support from fans to propel Roan against Buffaloes.

“Our fans have travelled a long way and I am just happy to see them here in Lusaka. It is a good moment, I know they have enjoyed it. Come Saturday, I want to see our fans at home where they will even be louder than here. They will push us and we will give them good results,” he said.

Nkwazi coach Masauso Tembo was left impressed by Roan’s display in Lusaka.

“Roan United played a good game. It is a good team. Roan played a passing game. Roan scored good goals. After Roan got the second goal they sat with a roadblock and it worked for them,” Tembo said.

The Roan supporters’ executive committee has high expectations from the newly promoted team.

Group General Secretary Bwalya Chilalika said supporters expected Roan to thrive in the top league.

“We expect the team to do much better, hoping even for the first position. Everything is possible. We need to finish in a reasonable position so that we are not relegated,” Chilalika said.

“I am sure with the structures put in place by the coach, the hard work from the players, and support from fans and management, I think we will do well,” he said.

Roan are famous for winning the inaugural national football league in 1962.
