Government has urged Mayors, Council Chairpersons and Councillors across the country to take an active role in spearheading development projects and advancing the Grow Zambia Agenda.

Cabinet Office Permanent Secretary for Special Duties, Wisdom Bwalya says civic leaders should prioritise development and avoid unnecessary conflicts that may hinder progress in their respective districts.

Mr Bwalya said this in Chongwe district when he officially closed a five-day training workshop for a cohort of newly elected civic leaders at Chalimbana Local Government Institute.

He also presented certificates to participants, who included Mayors, Council Chairpersons, Councillors and traditional leaders.

He emphasised that all leaders serving in councils, regardless of how they were appointed or elected, had a common responsibility of promoting development and should therefore be treated equally.

The PS urged the civic leaders to embrace one another and work collectively towards addressing the needs of the people in their respective communities.

He also acknowledged the important role traditional leaders play in resolving conflicts and supporting local development initiatives.

Meanwhile, Chalimbana Local Government Institute Principal James Paipi said the training was designed to equip the newly elected civic leaders with the knowledge and skills required to effectively discharge their responsibilities.

Mr Paipi said the training had brought together various categories of councillors, including those elected from wards, traditional leaders and representatives appointed through the mixed-member proportional representation system.

And Chongwe Mayor Frederick Saashi said the participants would apply the knowledge acquired during the training to improve the performance of their respective local authorities.

Mr Sashi described the training as an eye-opener that had enhanced the participants’ understanding of their civic responsibilities.

The Mayor assured that the participants would return to their respective districts with valuable knowledge to support effective service delivery and local development.
