Pastor Matoka of Christian Community Church in Lusaka’s Woodlands said Zambia had grown beyond political independence to make progress in economic development, while remaining a beacon of peace and hope on the continent.
He was speaking in an interview with the media during a recent visit to Chief Kakoma’s Chiefdom in Mwinilunga District, North-Western Province for the Lubanji Lwa Kulema Nzambi traditional ceremony.
Pastor Matoka, who is also a nephew of Zambia’s first Information Minister and freedom fighter, the late Peter Matoka said the Church had also played a critical role in the country’s growth and development agenda since independence.
He said the Church had contributed to education, healthcare, national food security and employment creation, in addition to providing spiritual guidance to national leaders and citizens.
Commenting on this year’s Independence theme, “Zambia at 62: Our Journey, Our Growth, Our Future,” Pastor Matoka described it as timely saying it provided an opportunity for citizens to reflect on the country’s past challenges and build on the progress made.
He said Zambia’s future remained bright and urged citizens to harness the country’s potential while preserving its reputation as a beacon of peace and hope.
Meanwhile, Pastor Matoka commended the Government for its efforts to recognize and support freedom fighters, but called for more meaningful interventions beyond the awarding of medals of honour.
He proposed that the Government consider empowering families of surviving freedom fighters through improved housing and scholarships for their children.
“The freedom fighters are the architects of the democracy and freedom we are enjoying today as a nation. It is because of their sweat that we are here today. Some of them died and bled as they struggled to bring independence,” he said.
Pastor Matoka also called for increased investment in North-Western Province, saying the region remained behind in infrastructure development despite being one of the country’s major contributors to copper and other mineral production.
He said the province needed improved infrastructure, including hospitals, universities and road networks to unlock its economic potential.
“North-Western Province is potentially the richest province in the country today. It is a bedrock of minerals, has good rainfall patterns, forests for timber and rivers that do not run dry among other things, hence, the need to invest back in that land,” he said.
