The Ministry of Small and Medium Enterprise Development has urged young Zambians to become job creators by investing in trade skills.
Ministry of Small and Medium Enterprise Development Director, Pamela Chitulangoma, encouraged youths to obtain trade certification through TEVETA‑accredited centres and engage in various entrepreneurial ventures.
Ms Chitilangoma explained that the ministry is working in collaboration with other stakeholders such as the Zambia Bureau of Standards, Zambia Compulsory Standards, and Zambia Revenue Authority, to ensure businesses are formalised.
”We are in conversation with TEVETA as we do curriculum development, we bring the industry partners on board so that we ensure what is coming from our trade schools is relevant,” she said.
Ms Chitulangoma further highlighted that the government has embarked on an engineering product strategy empowerment project, aimed at formalising entrepreneurs’ businesses.
She added that the project is being conducted in collaboration with JICA and other stakeholders.
” The project has targeted the welders that are on the roadside to capacity build them,” she said.
Ms Chitulangoma further disclosed that the Ministry has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Kaizen Institute of Zambia to help in training entrepreneurs in capacity building and new technologies to improve their skills.
And Musonda Autoworks Chief Executive Officer, Musonda Mulenga, has encouraged small scale enterprises to move to modern technological systems.
Mr Mulenga emphasised that there is a need to upgrade to new technologies, adding that nearly every year car manufacturers change.
” You need to have an understanding of what has changed from the old system to the new system,” Mr Mulenga cautioned.
Meanwhile, Lusaka welder, Davison Lungu has encouraged youths to venture into welding and other trade skills.
Mr Lungu said young people should join enterprises that will enable them to learn some skills.
