KELVIN KAUNDA SUPPORTER BREAKS DOWN OVER MP’S CONTINUED DETENTION

John JMK, a supporter of detained NRPUP Lima Constituency Member of Parliament Kelvin Kaunda, has broken down emotionally over his lawmaker’s continued detention despite the presentation of working sureties.

As of 18:00 hours on Thursday, October 15, 2026, NRPUP MPs for Kabwata, Kwacha and Milenge, Danny Yenga, Dr Brian Chirambo and Gystave Chonde, respectively, had presented their working sureties for Mr Kaunda at Lusaka Central Police Station.

Mr Kaunda was picked up by plain-clothes police officers at around 16:00 hours on Thursday as he left the Supreme Court following proceedings in the Lima Constituency election petition.

He was subsequently arrested on a charge of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and remained in detention.

The allegations relate to an incident during a campaign roadshow in Lima Constituency on August 7, 2026.

Earlier, police officer Joseph Chileshe testified before the Lusaka High Court that he received a complaint from UPND supporter Anthony Mwamba, who alleged that Mr Kaunda assaulted him during the roadshow.

Mr Chileshe told the court that the complaint was made at around 21:00 hours on the same day.

However, during cross-examination, the officer acknowledged that the Police Occurrence Book entry did not specifically identify the person who allegedly assaulted Mr Mwamba.
