 U.S. EMBASSY ISSUES WARNING AS RUSSIA’S PLAGUE SCARE DEEPENS

We have been following this story since the first reports emerged from Russia’s Irkutsk region—and the concern has now reached the diplomatic level.

It began with the unexplained death of a 28-year-old employee at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Research Institute. She reportedly developed severe pneumonia after working inside a facility that handles some of the world’s most dangerous pathogens. Russian authorities described the illness as pneumonia of an undetermined origin while investigating whether pneumonic plague was involved.

Reports of quarantine measures and restrictions at medical facilities followed. The World Health Organization, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and other international agencies began monitoring the situation, while Washington demanded greater transparency from Moscow.

Now the U.S. Embassy in Moscow has issued a warning to American citizens regarding the suspected case. The embassy said it is monitoring developments and reminded Americans that Washington has limited ability to provide assistance inside Russia, particularly outside Moscow.

The embassy also repeated its instruction that Americans should not travel to Russia and that those already there should leave. Importantly, this is not a new evacuation order caused specifically by the suspected infection. Russia was already under the highest U.S. travel-warning level because of detention risks, the war and limited consular support.

Russian authorities insist that no plague cases have been detected among the woman’s contacts, and the WHO currently considers the wider risk low. No outbreak has been confirmed.

But this story has moved far beyond an isolated local rumor. A death inside an anti-plague research institute, incomplete information from Russian authorities and formal warnings from foreign governments have placed the incident under international scrutiny.

What happened inside that laboratory remains the unanswered question.
