UPND SAYS IT WILL NOT ABUSE PARLIAMENTARY MAJORITY TO PASS RECKLESS LAWS

UPND Deputy Spokesperson Elvis Nkandu has challenged the opposition to strengthen its parliamentary representation through hard work, insisting that the ruling party’s numerical advantage will not be used to push through reckless laws or policies that do not benefit Zambians.
Mr. Nkandu was responding to concerns raised by Tonse Pamodzi Alliance Secretary General Muhabi Lungu, who questioned the relevance of opposition lawmakers in Parliament given the UPND’s majority, which could enable it to pass bills with limited resistance.
Mr. Nkandu has dismissed suggestions that opposition parties should consider withdrawing from Parliament because of their smaller numbers, arguing that electoral performance determines representation and that even a single opposition lawmaker has a role to play in the legislative process.
He has maintained that the UPND will not exploit its parliamentary majority to make decisions that undermine the interests of citizens, saying the party is committed to responsible governance.
He cited the mixed-member proportional representation system introduced under the UPND administration as an example of an electoral measure that has benefited opposition parties, particularly in provinces where they had struggled to secure elected seats.
