The State has denied allegations that opposition politician Brian Mundubile, lawyer Makebi Zulu and 16 others were tortured or subjected to unlawful treatment while in detention
In court documents, Zambia Police Assistant Superintendent Saviours Hakumbi has also disputed claims that three of the petitioners were offered incentives to become State witnesses and provide evidence implicating Mundubile and Zulu.
The 18 petitioners have taken the matter to court, alleging violations of their constitutional rights relating to their arrest, detention, transfers, access to lawyers and families, and their treatment while in custody.
The allegations remain contested before the court.
No judicial determination has yet been made on whether the alleged torture or witness inducement occurred.
