Puma Energy Zambia Plc, a subsidiary of the Trafigura Group has welcomed government’s focus on strengthening Zambia’s energy security, building a more resilient petroleum supply chain and supporting competitive fuel pricing.

Puma Energy Zambia Plc Managing Director Zwelithini Mlotshwa told ZANIS today that the Company stands ready to work with government, the Energy Regulation Board (ERB) and industry partners to achieve the said goals.

Mr Mlotshwa advised that the goals should be achieved through a transparent, consultative approach that attracts private investment, safeguards security of supply and benefits consumers and the wider economy.

He has also welcomed President Hichilema’s call to accelerate the construction of petroleum pipelines, saying for a land-linked economy, diversifying import routes should be a strategic priority.

“Additional pipelines can reduce reliance on a single supply corridor and strengthen resilience to regional disruptions, enhance security of supply, reduce the volume of fuel moved by road and support growing demand from mining, industry and consumers,” he added.

He charged that the Company is encouraged by the President’s emphasis on public-private partnerships and joint ventures, as well as the priority given to construction of petroleum pipelines, saying Puma Energy and Trafigura are ready to engage with the government to explore how the projects can be supported.

“Trafigura brings capital, global sourcing, logistics and risk management experience. Puma Energy brings an established downstream presence in Zambia, spanning importation, storage, distribution, retail, aviation and supply to commercial and mining customers,” he added.

On the monthly fuel pricing mechanism by ERB, Mr Mlotshwa said Puma Energy welcomes the President’s proposal to review the pricing window.

“A more predictable system, including a possible longer cycle, could give consumers and businesses greater planning certainty. We support any framework that is transparent, predictable and reflects the actual cost of supplying fuel to Zambia,” he said.

Mr Mlotshwa looks forward to contributing to the consultation with government, the ERB and industry stakeholders, so that the final design works for consumers, industry and the national economy.
